Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP)

Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP)PTRP is a 220 acre Brownfield site, encompassing the majority of the former R.J. Reynolds tobacco manufacturing mill in the heart of Winston-Salem. Envisioning a new research and development campus for the Wake Forest University Medical Center, the city and university developed a master plan to rezone the area and converted a once blighted sector of the city into a thriving R&D/Biotechnology center. Serving as project manager, Doug Hartnett was responsible for implementing the first phase of the master plan. Doug worked with the university, city officials and regional stakeholders to refine the future development proposed in the master plan. This included the need for city engineers to realign the road network and daylighting of a culverted stream, negotiations with the Norfolk Southern railroad to abandon portions of a cargo rail corridor that had bisected the site and Duke Energy to relocate an 100kVW overhead electric transmission easement that encumbered the site.
